About our live rock and what we feel, and have proven for many years, makes it possible to have a stable and thriving reef aquarium.
With the combination of,dense Premium Caribbean Live Rock, thicker/denser base rock, and decorative pieces like Fiji and other Pacific types of rock as finale decor or filler, you can be assured that with a total combined amount of 1.5-2 lbs per gallons (total live rock in your tank) you can have a stable and thriving reef aquarium, and much more affordably than you may have been led to believe elsewhere and also with out waiting years to achieve.
And as long as you use our thicker denser Caribbean rock as well as our thicker denser base rock
(75% of your total rock),you will NOT have nitrate issues, under normal conditions.
The thicker and denser the live rock you put into your tank the better.
As we have proven that your nitrate eating (anearobic) bacteria mainly thrive where there are very low levels of oxygen. Which ocurrs deep inside dense, less porous rock.
Another posative side of using the thicker denser Caribbean and base rock is that it takes up MUCH less room in your tank, while still giving you the desired weight and also leaving plenty of room for your corals and fish to grow and move around.
Our Caribbean live rock is also unbeatable in the amount of sea life that you will get,as it is much fresher than your fiji rock that usualy sells for more at your local fish store than we sell our good stuff for.
Unfortunately most LFS can not or will not get this high quality "Caribbean live rock" for you because they are paying less per pound for the porous Fiji rock and selling it to you for an average of $6.99 per pound, which is a nice proffit for them. In the long run, they kinda milk you for more money later also, when you find you are constantly fighting nitrates,as they have to sell you other more expensive equipment and setups, etc. etc.etc.,to try and compensate for the lack of nitrate eating ability of the rock they sold you.
The Fiji Rock also takes up much more space in your tank because the pieces are usualy more lightweight, making you have to fill your tank to the rim practicaly, just to get the needed amount of live rock to get you to your 1.5 to 2 pounds per gallon.
Again,we stick with using a mixture of both Caribbean live rock and thick dense live base rock for about 75% of our needed live rock total, and then we like to add in a few pieces of Florida liverock or Fiji,Tonga branch,Marshall Island or what have you,as a finale touch to get us to our total of 1.5 to 2 lbs per gallon total liverock needed.
We also like a 3 to 5 inch sand bed, madeup of a mixture of 85% new substrate and 15% seeded, established live sand/substrate or even all live sand which may cost a little more but is well worth it if its cured properly.
we have Caribbean live sand instock and also seeded live sand/gravel as well.
As you can see,our Caribbean live rock saves you so much money for many reasons such as the fact that it comes in with so many critters like feather dusters, xmas tree worms, sea squirts, many different crabs, live corals, pods, crustaceans and so much more, that are there to eat up waste, which also ofcourse reduces the the amount of nitrates that may accumulate later. Our Caribbean rock also has your ammonia and nitrite eating bacteria on the outer surface but is thick and dense enough to grow loads of anearobic bacteria deep within the rock, thus completing the nitrogen cycle and making nitrates of little concern.
Inturn making it possible to sustain a beautiful living reef for many many years to come.
We then can do one of several very affordable types of filtration on this setup.
We can:
1. Put a good ole Hot Mag canister filter on the back of the tank and add a good protien skimmer which we like the Coralife Super Skimmer for this.
And a few powerheads in the tank for good water flow,in and around the rock reef we have built.
We then introduce a few more clean up critters such as some nassa snails, sand sifting stars etc. for keeping your sand cleaned and stirred. And some blue leg hermit crabs, and algea snails of choice etc..
It is always good to add a few brittle stars as well,as most of these mentioned critters eat up some detritus and algea etc. and help your tank stay cleaner.
Dont forget that a lot of your feather dusters, corals, polyps and other desired specimens you will be keeping will also be filtering out a lot of stuff too,
So basicaly, it is this simple to maintain a very beautiful and successful reef aquarium.
To also keep it thriving,we suggest you keep your salinity at 1.023 and your temperature at 76-78 to keep everyone happy in a mixed reef.
You will also want to do a 25-35% water change and filter change and cleaning once per month with prified R.O. or D.I. water or both (you should set your tank up with purified water from the start as well),and use a good salt mix, which there are a lot of good ones out there but we like our instant ocean and have been using it for years and years.
Other than what is mentioned above, topping off with fresh purified water for evaporation and a once a week cleaning of your Blue Sleeve on your Hot Mag carbon jug (carbon should be replaced every 3-4 weeks),and dumping your protien skimmer collection cup as needed, will be the majority of the maintenance required to keep everything up.
We believe anyone that is willing to set aside 2-4 hours per week for their tank, can have a great looking saltwater setup.
Also keep your magnet cleaner up in the front corner of your tank if you like,so you can keep the viewing area of the glass nice and clean.
As with all of our filtration and setup recommendations and methods,we suggest that you keep up with your PH and alkalinity,we buffer with Kent Marine super buffer DKH builder for that.(PH 8.3-8.4 Alk 143.2-214.8 or a little higher).
We also recommend the use of C-Balance once per week or up to 3 times per week on heavily stocked tanks.
And also the use of Kent Marines Essential Elements once per week and Kents turbo Calcium whenever your Calcium levels fall below 420ppm.
We find that alternating between C-Balance one week, and then your Kent Marine Super Buffer/DKH builder,Turbo Calcium and Kents Essential Elements the next week, gives amazing results and simplicity in helping to provide great water parameters, and affordably at that...
There you have one easy, and affordable way to have your very own reef aquarium, that will thrive and grow for many many years.
2. You can put a sump on this setup as well, and use either liverock or rubble rock in it and put a good skimmer on it and still use the HOT MAG for chemical and mechanical filtration and the powerheads for water movement,or you can put micron filter felt in the path or basket of the sump and then a layer of carbon over it and another layer of filter felt ontop, and not use the HOT MAG,but still use your protien skimmer and power heads, and there you have yet 2 more very successful ways of maintaining a living thriving reef aquarium, also at a more affordable total cost than the ways most local fish stores recommend.
We have proven for many years now that with the balance and types of liverock and the quantities we specified, you will save money by not having to buy expensive denitrators, mangroves, chaeto, all those extra critters that you just dont find on a lot of Pacific rock but get on our rock for free, etc..
And refugiums HUH! lol with our methods you can leave them for use to separate meanies from the main tank or to keep seahorses or something desirable in but on the same main, stable, system like they were meant to be used for.
We have also proven that with these specific mixtures/types/quantities of liverock, and filtration choices, you will also be able to have much more livestock in your tank, which im sure everyone is ok with :)
There are many ways to have a successfull saltwater aquarium,If what you are doing works for you, stick with it. However,if your new to this hobby or just not having any luck with your local fish store, and want this hobby to be as affordable, enjoyable and as easy as we gaurantee we can make it for you, please give us a call. 910-848-1100
